history/deviation

History: Axl was designed as a prototype of a new variety of reploid (sentient, humanoid androids) that was able to transform and that was meant to be immune to the Maverick Virus, which can damage a Reploid and drive them to madness and violence. However, for reasons unknown, he was abandoned without any memory of his origins and with an X-shaped scar on his face, and taken in by Red, the leader of the Red Alert bounty hunter group. For a while, Red was like a father figure to Axl, and they were happy. But Sigma (the leader of the Reploids who had gone Maverick) gained control of the group, and Axl fled as soon as he realized what had happened, after unwillingly giving up some of his copy data.

He was chased by a robot dispatched by Red, but the Maverick Hunter Zero managed to stop it barely in time. Zero took Axl back to Headquarters to force him to explain what had happened, and Axl told them the basics of his story and asked for asylum - and a chance to join the Hunters. The now mostly-retired X, who was increasingly moving towards pacifism, thought that Axl was too young, too inexperienced, and too hot-headed to work effectively - X believed that maturity and calm were needed. They granted Axl asylum, though, due to the fact that he was in danger. Axl managed to force his way onto missions, though, through great effort, promising to impress X.

Red released Mavericks that he had held, starting a competition with the Hunters: whichever group defeated the Mavericks first would keep Axl. Axl fought them willingly, feeling guilty over the chaos he had started and wanting to impress the other Hunters. Eventually the group was forced to fight Red himself, and Axl unwillingly defeated him, not fully realizing that Red had been blackmailed.

They moved on and fought Sigma, Axl finally defeating him by assuming Red's form to lull Sigma into a sense of security before shooting him out of the building. He returned with the Hunters to HQ, where he asked again to join. X refused him due to his violent tactics, but decided to allow him to participate in missions.

Things became fairly steady for a while, with Axl assisting the Hunters in taking down various Mavericks. Things continued this way until the Jakob Project - an attempt to build an orbital elevator that would allow easy transit to the Moon - began. The project was staffed by other reploids like Axl with the ability to transform, and new information was released that revealed that these transforming reploids were meant to be a "new generation" that were immune to the Maverick Virus and that were able to handle many more tasks than standard reploids.

The head of the project, Lumine, was kidnapped by the Maverick Vile, and the other members of the New Generation began to go berserk. Axl, Zero, and X fought them off as best they could, and finally located Sigma on a half-completed base of operations on the moon. They made it through and successfully defeated Sigma, when Lumine stepped out of the rubble and thanked them for aiding his plan.

He proceeded to explain that the new generation all had Maverick data built into them and that they could therefore go Maverick at will. When Axl asked if this meant he would go mad, Lumine told him that prototypes didn't have the right design, and asked him if Sigma was really mad. He began to describe the need for the world to evolve, clearing away the old generation reploids and the humans and starting a better world. He mocked X about the fact that if he fired, he would be going after someone with free will, but finally, as X hesitated, Axl shot at Lumine and reminded them all that he was the enemy.

Eventually, after a long fight, Lumine was beaten down, warning them as he died that the movement towards evolution was unstoppable. Axl approached the cracked and broken body, but tentacles emerged from it and struck his forehead, shattering the gem on his helmet. He collapsed as X and Zero fought off the tentacles and got him back to safety. What happened from there is unfortunately unknown.

Deviation: Axl remembers where he was "born" very well. He spent the first year or so of his "life" in a laboratory, with scientists doing everything they could to perfect his abilities as a prototype of the New Generation. He was mostly treated as an experiment and not as a being, but he didn't particularly care, since he knew nearly nothing about the outside world. He was trained in combat and in using his abilities, and he quickly showed success. On certain occassions, he was even allowed to talk to his "brother", Lumine, who was only partially constructed but who would sometimes be briefly activated for the sake of testing, and the two bonded to a certain extent.

However, Sigma discovered the existance of the New Generation project and decided to put it to use. He proceeded to corrupt Red Alert and had them attack the base. Axl barely managed to escape alive, although he was scarred during the escape, and he lost track of Lumine and the project managers as he fled. He was trailed by one of Red Alert's robots, though, and only barely saved by Zero, who took him back to the Maverick Hunter Headquarters.

Axl had been kept away from the outside world for the most part, but once it was explained to him what the Hunters did, he asked to join. X rejected him based on his youth and inexperience, and Axl promised to impress him.

Red Alert issued a statement that claimed that Axl was one of their members who had escaped, and Axl did not openly deny it, not certain that he wanted to reveal the details of his life - mostly because it'd make his naivete even more apparent to X. Red started a competition to destroy released Mavericks, and Axl and Zero once again stepped in to stop it, Axl feeling guilty about the chaos he had caused and wanting to find out if Red Alert knew anything about where his "family" was now. Although he did demand information from Red after the man had been defeated, Red said that he had never seen Lumine, and so Axl calmly eliminated him. They went on to defeat Sigma together as a team, Axl once again luring Sigma into a sense of security with Red's form before shooting.

X continued to refuse to allow Axl to join the Hunters, but he allowed him to participate on missions. For a year or so things went as routine for the Hunters - they took down various Mavericks and things remained steady. Then the Jakob Project began, and according to reports, the next generation Reploids were in charge of it - lead by Lumine. Axl tried to contact him, but before he could get a chance, Lumine was captured by a Maverick known as Vile, and the New Generation Reploids began to go berserk (which was odd given their immunity to the virus). The Hunters leapt into action - Axl with a heavy heart, given the fact that he was fighting his "brothers" that he had only just met.

Finally, they made it to Sigma's palace, fighting the man yet again. He was defeated at last, and Axl ran to greet his freed brother - only to be knocked back by a sudden blast.

Lumine stepped out of the rubble, smirking, and explained. Sigma had taken over the New Generation project after Red Alert's attack and turned it into his personal project. As a result, all of the members of the New Generation had the Maverick Virus in their system, without any safeguards. Because of this, all New Generation Reploids had the potential to go Maverick "at will", and Sigma and Lumine had planned to make them do so and form a new and better world. The kidnapping had been staged - designed to draw the Hunters in - but it had also removed an obstacle from Lumine's path. Lumine explained that he had always considered Sigma too weak - a relic of the old generation. He wanted to make a world that was free of both humans and relics, populated only by members of the New Generation.

He ended his speech by extending his hand to Axl and asking his brother to join him. He remembered Axl and wanted the boy - his older brother and his friend - to be by his side in the new world, despite everything that Axl had done to his "brethren". Axl was deeply torn, but eventually he fired a single shot at Lumine, choking back the urge to cry, and the battle began.

The Hunters won in the end, and Lumine died after telling his brother that the new world would not be prevented forever and warning him that this would not be the end. As Axl slowly approached his fallen brother, though, deep purple tentacles shot out of the reploid's form, striking Axl in the forehead and shattering the gem there. Axl fainted as Zero and X severed the tentacles, and the three returned to Earth.

Axl's crystal was repaired and he seemed fine, and he was even finally inducted into the Hunters due to the bravery he had shown, but odd things began to happen. He seemed more snappish on missions and refused to help in any that involved fighting the remaining members of the New Generation (which still sometimes went rogue). He also seemed to have less concern about accidential fatalities during missions. Still, nothing was off enough that it could be definitively placed.

And as he was about to finish off another Maverick, he blacked out and woke up somewhere new.

personality

Axl, most of the time, is a bright, cheerful, energetic boy. He has a great deal of enthusiasm about everything he does, and he can get deeply involved in a mission - sometimes too involved, as he has a tendency to get trigger-happy. He can talk a mile a minute, bothers people all the time when he's bored, gets irritated quickly with static or boring situations, and otherwise acts like a fairly normal (if hot-headed) young teen.

There's more than that going on below the surface, though. The experience with Lumine changed him and made him question his straightforward morals and wants. He's no longer nearly as certain that the Hunters are right and the Mavericks are wrong - after all, his own brother (apparently willingly) turned against humanity. He's trying to work these issues out, but he covers them up around others by snapping at them angrily or by changing the subject and acting cheerful whenever it's brought up.

Unknown to Axl, he also has a second "self" lurking in his subconscious - Lumine's final attack transferred part of his data to Axl. This second personality only appears when Axl is deeply frightened or angry, and it is very different from Axl. Lumine is charismatic and manipulative but also completely mad. He believes himself to be the only rightful ruler of the New World that he will form, and he considers everyone - especially humans - to be inferior to him. He's smug and confident and sometimes cackles with madness and glee.

appearance

Axl's basic build is that of a teenage boy, with a slender frame and round face. His hair is light brown and usually tied into a ponytail that sticks out behind his head in wild, seemingly gravity-defying spikes. (Left loose, his hair is just a complete mess.) His eyes are wide and a brilliant shade of green. His skin is lightly tanned, and his face is marred by an X-shaped scar that crosses over his nose.

He is physically distinct from humans in a few ways - for one, he is always wearing a gray, skin-tight bodysuit that is permanently part of his skin. His ears are completely inhuman - they are very large and white, sticking partially over his head and looking a bit like large mechanical cat ears. Each has a round, red indentation in them at about the level a human ear would be, and both have red stripes painted down them.

When Lumine is in control, he often uses the Copy Chip to partially modify Axl's appearance. In this form, Axl has pale lavender hair, orange-red eyes, a dark purple bodysuit, purple stripes on his ears, and paler skin. In addition, his scar is mostly faded, and is nearly invisible most of the time against his skin.

strengths/weaknesses/abilites

Abilities: Axl's main ability comes from the Copy Chip that he possesses. With it, he can transform himself into the form of any reploid that he has defeated that is near his size and weight. In addition, if he has his normal set of two guns (which are designed to work with his ability) he can use other powers through them without changing himself. At the current moment, his Chip is almost entirely empty of data except for an alternate form of himself. Also, without his guns, he will be nearly incapable of extracting the data he needs.

He also is much stronger, faster, and more agile than a normal human, and he never runs out of breath or the like (although he does need to sleep to recharge).

Strengths: -Physically, Axl is stunning - he's fast, strong, can jump insanely high, and is generally far above human level.
-Axl is strong-willed and often shows deep conviction to his beliefs, and it's hard to sway or manipulate him.
-Axl is a very good shot with guns, and can hit distant targets with ease.
-Lumine is an excellent tactician and manipulator, and can easily design complex and intricate plans.

Weaknesses: -Without his guns, Axl is fairly useless in combat, since he has no hand-to-hand training.
-Axl can be far too reckless, charging into a situation without any forethought about the consequences.
-Axl is mentally unstable and losing his certainty, and it's increasingly easy to drive him into deep anxiety.
-Lumine is even more unstable, and prone to fits of irrational rage.
